One of the Flying Hammer’s favorite
woodworkers is Wayne, whose favorite toys when he was three were a hammer, nails and a board to pound them into. He made his
first set of table and chairs at five. Although he grew up as the son of a carpenter and cabinet maker, flying was his passion
and he pursued a career in aviation. Woodworking became his spiritual outlet.
He gets his philosophy from the Shakers,
in that each piece of wood should last at least as long as it took the tree to grow; and there is beauty in the simple form.
All items made at the Flying Hammer wood shop are created with reverence to the wood itself.
It’s unfortunate that Wayne doesn’t
live right in SNOW, but he does allow us to present his work, for which we are thankful. To quote him, “If it can
be made out of wood, I can make it.”
